We're playing this Thursday at the Edinburgh Castle. Yeah, this flyer is a lot like the last. Sorry. Next one will venture into new territory.

Needing to beef up the old home office setup while white-knuckle pinching my pennies, I found a killer deal on a 17" LCD Dell monitor with 1280x1024 native resolution, 1000:1 contrast ratio and DVI interface: its now-expired promo price was about $260 at their small business store. I just now received it from UPS and set it up, and it's making my laptop screen (which is no slouch in its own right) look rather low-contrast by comparison. Color me a satisfied customer. Take note, bargain hunters.

Also, you Mid-Atlantic rockers best be catching Hoover this weekend at the Black Cat. Lucky bastards.

Matt:

Yeah, Hoover. 3 out of 4 of the next shows I'm planning on going to are indie rock nostalgia acts - Hoover, Unrest/Eggs, Slint in NY. Odd band out is the Futureheads.

Chris:

Saw the first Hoover shows at Black Cat in 1994. It was a great time to live in DC. Amazing. Hopefully they will take the reunion show on the road.

Matt:

Yeah, I have some good memories of seeing those guys. I heard the European shows were really good, so I have high hopes for the show at the Black Cat.

Mike:

Just curious — where do those creepy black-and-white diagrams come from?

BK:

I try to bookmark sites with interesting, high-resolution artwork that's in the public domain. I got the artwork for this and the last flyer from the National Institute of Health's Dream Anatomy gallery. There are some cool old prints on there.

JW:

Hoover show in D.C. on Saturday was excellent. Matt K probably can offer a more detailed analysis of what went right (a lot) and what went wrong (what you might expect from a band that hasn't played much in 10 years).

Interesting mix of the young guard and the old guard in the crowd, though -- the music obviously earned a few new fans over the years. The place was about 3/4 full, but it probably would've been packed if the snowstorm hadn't come through in the afternoon.

Matt:

Yeah, it was fun. They were definitely tight. Maybe their voices (especially Joe's) sounded older, but definitely solid. They didn't play Cable or Side Car Freddie, but they played a sloppy version the Clash's Know Your Rights for an encore. I got the impression that they were playing it for the first time. I got word from a friend of the Hoover guys that this was it, although I also heard they were going to play a Chicago show. I guess it's accurate to say that this music is dated, which I heard from a few folks, but I still think it's fresh. Maybe I'm dated too.

JW:

Forgot to mention the big, bald, jean-jacketed dude who got onstage to demand an encore. And I quote: "The only music I like is metal and Hoover," and he added something about wanting to hear "Cable." It was cool that the band came back out, seemingly just for him.

The dude did a fake I'm-outta-here bolt when the band said it wouldn't be playing "Cable," but he turned right around and was like, "I'm joking."

BK:

OK, not to be a celeb-monger, but was the audience a who's who of DC hardcore?

Matt:

Not as much as the Lungfish show (last year?) - where a lot of *old* DC folks showed up, but at the Hoover show I only recognized the one q and not u guy, various mackayes, brendan canty, the guitar player from darkest hour (possible lookalike), and I think Dante Ferrando the guy from Gray Matter that part-owns the black cat. But I didn't have a good view of the side where the VIPs usually stand, so who knows. A couple of state college all-stars - David Batista and Soung Wiser were there, but no Jay Carrier. David said Garrett Rothman was supposed to come down from Harrisburg, but the snow proved to be too deep.
