Food, Fast

With the exception of the occasional guilty jaunt into Taco Bell, I don't really do the fast food thing anymore. Not that there's a whole lot for a lacto-ovo vegetarian to eat at such an establishment. Until now, that is: BK launches a veggie burger. Why didn't some fast food joint do this sooner?

Addendum: A&W has had a veggie burger for some time now.

Mickey D's actually sells a veggie burger in Europe (or at least in Switzerland). I guess they figure there's no market for it in the good ol' beef chuggin' US of A.

The article says the burger isn't vegan...but I wouldn't buy it if it was. BK's fries aren't even vegetarian, they are processed with beef tallow...and their food animals are subjected to the worst conditions in the meat industry. Read Fast Food Nation for more info.

Nice try Burger King...but your food is far from healthy.

Indeed. I'm not backing BK, despite their extra-cool initials.

mcdonalds are doing a trial version of a veggie burger in manhattan...i watched them fry one right next to the big macs....ugh. then i ran away...still hungry.

OK...I've read some things and changed my mind.

There's a great article by Eric Marcus (author of The New Ethics of Eating) on why vegans (or veggies) should SUPPORT this burger. After reading this and thinking about it, I agree 100%. I decided to go around the corner and get a micro-waved BK vegan burger (no mayo). I asked about the sales of the burger to the manager and noticed the woman behind me seemed interested. She then ordered one as well. It wasn't too bad (Bocas are better) but I think spreading the word about the vegan diet is even more important. (I did take it home and eat it with my own fries and water). I've always thought that being a tolerant vegan 'converts' more people than being a bitter 'food nazi' .

I'm not sure if I'll go back...but I think a step in the right direction is better than nothing. People will still visit fast food places regardless...there should at least be some sort of alternative to animal products.
